Reconsidering Blogging

For some reason I have immense problems writing bloggy stuff while sitting at my desk. So I grabbed my laptop and sat down in the couch and promptly got a strong urge to fall asleep. The comfy couch strikes again! But before I collapse I’ll try to squeeze out an actual blog entry.

The ten entries currently on the front page stretch back a year. The entry before this one was written six months ago. That’s… not really a good update frequency. So for the last week or so I’ve been reconsidering the whole format for this site.

CSS Naked Day

Today is CSS Naked Day. The idea is simple: strip all CSS from your site for a day. If your site doesn’t degrade gracefully, shame on you!

It may not be very pretty to look at (except in a 1995 kind of way), but my site is still fully readable. I didn’t make this Wordpress theme though, but I use the very same design principles — and this is essentially how blind people read web pages.

Coins

The new British coin designs are indeed very lovely. Via Kottke.

Earth Hour

So the Earth Hour was this weekend. I missed it completely. Which in my opinion wouldn’t really have mattered anyway. The amount of energy saved can be discussed.

And the end of the hour in Sydney was celebrated with fireworks. Yeah, good job there. “We saved energy! Let’s celebrate this by polluting the environment!”

Want to do something for nature? Go outside, take a walk, pick up garbage for an hour. Of course, that involves some actual work instead of turning off most of your lights and patting yourself on the back, so I guess that’ll never get popular.

Tooth Ache

Ugh. My wisdom tooth is on the move again. It started growing out and grinding against the gum on the other side, causing an inflammation.

It did the exact same thing a year ago, when it first started poking out of the gum. But it stopped moving, the inflammation went away, the gum changed shape to fit the new tooth and I didn’t bother to have it checked.

But now it’s moving again, and there may not be enough room for the gum to adapt. Seeing a dentist in two weeks to see if anything needs to be done.

In a fit of synchronisation I also started feeling stuff in a molar a week before the wisdom tooth gave me trouble again, so I was thinking about going to the dentist anyway — got some plaque to get rid of too. I suspect I have a cavity for the first time in twenty years (and the last time it was a milk tooth, so eventually I got a factory-new tooth).

And checking wikipedia for dental extraction probably didn’t help my anxiety against having body parts removed.

Memento Mori

Lo and behold, I shall actually strive to do some regular writing now. But not tonight; I need to fix various stuff on the site first. That’s on the to-do list for tomorrow.

Oops

Changed stuff. Site broke. Will fix later.

About time I upgrade Wordpress around here anyway. I need to move it out of the root folder and into /blog, which is where the archive is anyway.

Marketingspeak

Some thoughts about video. Video is outrageously complex and technical, even when you’re doing it correctly and you have no commercial interest in confusing your customers. On my desk is a plain old DVD that I rented from the local video store over the weekend; it proudly proclaims to be “MASTERED IN HIGH DEFINITION!” Whatever that means, it does not mean that it’s anything but a plain old DVD. The marketing of “high definition” content that actually is high definition (at least, higher than plain old DVDs) is even worse. Will you get high definition video out of your Blu-ray disc? That depends on your player, your TV, the cables in between, and the phase of the moon. Is your cable TV high definition? That depends on what the meaning of the word “is”? is. And so on. The Gene Generation

Michael prescribed rock; I prescribe some EBM.

I downloaded Combichrist’s latest album and gave it a good listen, and promptly added it to the shopping list (call me funny, but I like to have something to put in the shelf as well). Reading up a bit on the track list I also discovered that one of the songs, Get Your Body Beat, is featured on the soundtrack to The Gene Generation, a cyberpunkish movie that got released last summer but I didn’t hear about until now. I loves me some cyberpunk, so I’ll keep an eye out for that movie. Haven’t heard anything about a DVD release yet, though.

And here’s Get Your Body Beat by Combichrist, with a music video featuring some footage from The Gene Generation.

Construction Zone

I’m moving my domain to a different server, so there may be some brief interruptions ahead.

And I should really get moving on redesigning here. And write more. Meh.
