Perspective

That’s a lot of money. The answer to the question “Just how much is 87 billion dollars?”

Since my work happens to be counting money, I know for a fact that I could fit 20 million SEK in my bag.

Theoretically. Stop looking at me like that.

There’s also an image of George W Bush imitating a monkey. Or maybe he always looks like that.

Launch that bar!

As soon as I have a faster Mac, I’ll purchase a license for LaunchBar. It’s easily the best, uhm, launch bar I’ve tried.

Windows has its start menu, OS X has its Dock (capital D is important, I’m told). I’ve never been a big fan of the start menu in Windows, though I think it got slightly better with the big-ass menu in Windows XP. But it’s still annoying to find stuff in it, since I have to traverse through a whole bunch of sub-menus to get what I want.

The Dock is better, but it has very limited space — you can only fit so many icons in it before it fills the bottom of the screen, and when it does that it shrinks the icons to fit the new ones.

With LaunchBar, I hit Cmd+Space to activate it, and then type a few letters. It has an algorithm that is very good at guessing what you want — It correctly guessed “Dreamweaver” when I typed “dw”. It then associates this keyword to the application launched — the more times the keyword is used, the stronger the association gets.

LaunchBar uses an adaptive evaluation algorithm to find the best matching items based on the abbreviation you type in. A sophisticated rating system considers the position and density of the given letters within the name of each item defined in the setup. The resulting ratings are then adjusted based on the items previous usage. The more often a specific item or abbreviation was used in the past, the better it will be rated. LaunchBar learns from the users habits. LaunchBar details

With LaunchBar I have a “cloud” of all applications, Safari bookmarks, email addresses and other stuff. I just type a few letters, and it displays what it thinks are good matches. This is much faster than navigating the start menu in Windows, or digging in folders in Finder to start that application you don’t have in your Dock.

I love it. Too bad I haven’t found anything similar for Windows.

Also, by pure accident I just discovered that you can select several cells in a table by Ctrl-clicking them in Mozilla, and then copy the contents of just the selected cells. Very nice feature.

Googlism

Searched the web for “inlagd gurka” recept.
Did you mean: “inlagd gurkha” recept

I’m easily amused. Not fun if you don’t speak Swedish and have some knowledge about colonial Britain, though.

Friday Four

To make up for my lack of activity here, I’ll jump on the bandwagon and start doing things similar to NSLog’s QotD and Fredagsfyran (“Friday Four”) from Ettanolla.

Though technically, it’s really a Saturday Four. Here we go, then.

1. What album in your collection have you listened the most to?
That’s a tough question. I can’t say which one the all-time most played is, but the most recently bought CD is Le Serpent Blanc/Le Serpent Rouge by This Morn’ Omina. I have my entire CD collection ripped to disk, and I rarely listen to just one single album at a time. I can’t easily pick a favorite album either, but I think I’ll make a top ten list later.

2. What book do you want to re-read?
The National Encyclopedia! While not really a book, I love to browse random words there and learn new stuff. The account there is the best thing I’ve bought in a very long time!

When I was younger, I was a big fan of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, and read it several times a year. Haven’t read it for years, though. I really ought to re-read first The Hobbit and then The Trilogy of the War of the Ring and Return of the King — I have a vague memory that this is the correct full name of the trilogy.

3. What movie could you see several times at the cinema?
Let’s see. The only movies I can recall that I’ve seen more than once at a cinema is The Fellowship of the Ring and Men in Black. Right now there’s not really any movies I think are good enough to warrant a repeat visit.

4. What dish can you eat all week long?
Hmm. I’ve never really been in that situation. I always have enough variety available to not have to repeat my cooking for an entire week. I (almost) always have pasta, rice, couscous and french freedom fries in the pantry.
