A brief rant on defining categories in a meaningful way. More inside.
As mentioned in an earlier post, I’m thinking about how to best define my categories. Here are my thoughts so far.
Blogging — this will contain stuff relating to the concept of blogging, and possibly stuff I read on other blogs as well, though that may be placed in another category such as Life, since I’ve broadened that category.
Culture — previously called “Media,” which also was too loose and vague. “Culture” has more meaning. My thoughts about what happens in the rest of the world, though that may also be filed under Life every now and then if it hits closer to home, virtual or not.
Entertainment — this one used to be called “Fun,” but that was at the same time too broad and too narrow. Writings about movies will go here, and they certainly don’t have to be comedies. Also, music, games and whatever else I think of as entertainment goes here.
Internet — net technologies, web design, net phenomena and culture.
Life — this is where I write everything about myself. Will also handle the lives of others. A bit vague, but this is the best explanation I can manage at the moment. As mentioned, it may have a bit of overlapping with Blogging.
Link Soup — this one was born as “Blogrolling,” but that was too narrow. Now it’s for every time I post a bunch of links with little to no other content. Perfect for bookmark cleaning.
Lyrics — every now and then I post the lyrics of a song that I like. This got a category all for itself.
Meta — stuff about the site. As simple as that.
Tech — the geeky stuff about hardware, gadgets and cool toys. May have a bit of overlapping with Internet, but probably not much.
Work — the name explains it all. Will also contain school stuff, since I go back to studying after new year and don’t need a separate category just for that.
And thus I now have ten categories, with Life currently being the largest one, followed by Meta. When I get the roleplaying going again, I’m planning to add a separate category for that; the same goes for wargaming. Other than that, I’m not predicting any large changes.
Of course, I’m open for change. Should I start to write a large amount of stuff about computer games (hey, I have been a reviewer for a magazine…), games will get a separate category. It’s not set in stone.
